Situated near Toulouse, Chateau Engalin is a hospitality estate dedicated to bringing people together for unforgettable experiences.

Founded by chef, owner, creative director and Master Chef finalist Marwan Badran, Chateau Engalin grew from a life lived across cultures and disciplines. Born in Baghdad to a Lebanese father and an Indian-Portuguese mother, raised in London, trained in medicine, but drawn inevitably to food, Marwan’s approach is one of a shared creative and social act.

Chateau Engalin lives in contrast: old stone and expressive contemporary art, calm nature and exuberant celebration, indulgence tempered by restraint. Sophisticated in its architecture, unruly in its spirit, the estate moves fluidly between indoor intimacy and outdoor excess.

Shaped by place rather than protocol, Chateau Engalin offers a complete, weather-proof celebration. Experiences are typically held over four days and the estate adapts effortlessly to rain or shine, moving between gardens and salons, poolside afternoons and candlelit nights, bars, and terraces. The focus is not contingency, but flow: allowing events to unfold naturally within a historic site designed for gathering, pleasure and memory-making. Whatever the conditions, the experience remains generous and deeply connected to its setting.

The challenge was to design an identity that moves as fluidly as the experience itself. It needed to be Chateau-like and French in its foundations, yet expressive, generous and full of character. The identity had to act as a unifying force, tying together the many moods of Engalin, from quiet refinement to exuberant celebration.

Pentagram Partner, Samar Maakaroun redesigned the brand around Marwan’s philosophy of food, using sauce as a metaphor for unity. Sauce binds, elevates, and transforms, allowing for restraint or excess, precision or abandon. This philosophy is expressed through custom letterforms designed to act as a unifying force, bringing diverse influences together into a single visual language.

The colour palette draws directly from the kitchen. A fresh pistachio references the seasonal local ingredients that feed the changing menu, a sumac red nods to Marwan’s Middle Eastern origins, a grilled orange carries heat and energy to the indulgent evenings and slouchy mornings, and a squid ink adds depth and drama. All of these are held together with sea salt, for a cuisine shaped by contrast, generosity and indulgence.
